Our history

Hot Stamping Dies started in Industria, Johannesburg in 2008 with a simple aim: make accurate hot-stamping dies and embossing plates that arrive ready for press. From one small workshop to a national supply line, the story has been built around careful workmanship, practical turnaround times, and support for printers who need the job right first time.

2008: A small workshop in Industria

We opened our doors in 2008 in Industria, Johannesburg, working with a small set of tools, a sharp eye for detail and a clear understanding of how press rooms operate. The first jobs were straightforward brass dies for local print finishers, packaging houses and label converters who needed clean detail and reliable heat transfer. Those early years set the tone for everything that followed.

From the start, the focus was on practical service. If artwork needed checking, if a counterforce had to be matched, or if a client was uncertain about the depth of an emboss, the answer was to look carefully and solve the problem before the job went out. That approach helped build trust with businesses that could not afford wasted sheets, missed deadlines or rework.

2010 to 2013: Building process and consistency

As the workload grew, the business began refining its workflow so that each order moved from enquiry to dispatch with less delay. Artwork checks became a regular part of the process, because good results start long before the die reaches the press. We also built a stronger record system for repeat ordering, job filing and die alterations, which made it easier to match older work and keep brand details consistent across reprints.

By this stage, the team had learnt how South African production schedules really work. Municipal power interruptions, load-shedding and tight finishing windows can interrupt a whole week of planning, so urgency had to be managed with structure. That meant clearer communication, careful packing, and a dispatch process that could still perform when a job had to leave Industria and reach another province without delay.

  • Artwork checks for line weight, detail and layout before engraving starts
  • Repeat ordering for customers who need the same die again
  • Job filing that keeps a record of sizes, materials and prior adjustments

2014 to 2017: Expanding into more sectors

Once the workshop was established, more sectors began to call on us. Offset printers wanted crisp finishing for premium pieces, while flexo and packaging clients needed dies that could stand up to regular use on production lines. We increased our focus on brass and magnesium options so that each job could be matched to the right application, whether the priority was long life, fast turnaround, or a lighter die for a particular run.

During these years the work also became more specialised. We handled sample impression advice for clients who wanted to test a finish before committing to full production, and we improved our die design process to suit embossed logos, sharp edges and fine line work. In many cases, a small adjustment early on saved time later and kept the final print looking clean.

  • Die design for branding, packaging and print finishing work
  • Engraving production for brass and magnesium dies
  • Sample impression advice for trial runs and approval pieces

2018 to 2020: Team growth and nationwide reach

As more work came in from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Mbombela, the team had to grow in step. Thabo Mokoena led the business with a strong production focus, while Ayesha Naidoo helped tighten the workflow across the shop floor. Johan van der Merwe brought detailed engraving knowledge, Lerato Molefe kept customers informed, Sibusiso Dlamini managed dispatch, and Megan Petersen handled artwork prepress so files were ready for production.

The business also became better at packing and couriering dies nationwide. Hot-stamping tools are small, but they still need proper protection against knocks, dust and moisture in transit. Packing had to suit the route, the season and the urgency of the order, especially for clients in coastal areas where humidity can affect stored tools if they are not handled correctly.

  • Packing dispatch for courier delivery across South Africa
  • Damage assessment and die cleaning for tools returning from press rooms
  • Urgent turnaround for time-sensitive launches and reprints

2021 to 2023: Sharper turnaround and stronger support

In the later years, the business focused on speed without losing accuracy. That meant tightening internal checks, improving counterforce matching, and making sure every die was assessed properly before it left the workshop. Clients often came to us with jobs that had already been approved in principle but needed one last technical check, and that is where experienced support matters most.

We also saw more repeat work from packaging houses and finishers who needed dependable backup from a local Johannesburg supplier. Whether the job was a clean embossing plate, a damaged die that needed assessment, or a small alteration to an existing tool, the aim was to respond quickly and keep production moving. A missed detail can hold up a whole pack run, so the final inspection became even more important.

  • Counterforce matching for cleaner embossing and more even pressure
  • Die alterations for revised artwork or changed pack sizes
  • Damage assessment to decide whether a tool can be repaired or remade

Today: A practical partner for print finishing

Today Hot Stamping Dies remains based in Industria, Johannesburg and serves businesses across South Africa through the same practical approach that started in 2008. The business is still centred on brass and magnesium hot-stamping dies, embossing plates and the support work that helps them perform properly in production. We know that printers need more than a tool, they need a team that understands deadlines, substrate behaviour and the pressure of finishing work that must look right first time.

What has stayed consistent over the years is the way we handle each order. From the first artwork check to final filing after dispatch, the aim is to keep the process clear and dependable. Our history is really a record of steady work, careful craft and many jobs completed for clients who expect their branding to come through with clarity and detail.
