Finishing Jobs

These project pages highlight the kinds of die work we produce for printers, finishers and packaging houses across South Africa. Each example shows a different application, turnaround need or production challenge solved through accurate tooling.

Choose the right finishing job for the print run

Not every job needs the same tooling. A short run of premium cartons may call for a magnesium die with quick turnaround, while a high-volume job with repeated use often benefits from brass. When you are comparing options, think about substrate, quantity, level of detail and how much pressure the finisher will use on press.

We work from Industria in Johannesburg and courier dies to finishing teams nationwide, from Pretoria and Durban to Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Mbombela. If the job must match existing tooling, or if you are restarting a repeat order months later, we can help assess the old file and advise whether it needs a clean re-cut, a modification or a full remake.

Artwork checks that prevent costly rework

Clean artwork saves time on press and avoids wasted board, foil and labour. Before engraving, we check line weights, spacing, knockouts, reverses and any detail that may not hold through stamping or embossing. That matters when the finished piece must stay crisp on coated board, uncoated stock or textured packiging materials.

  • Confirm the final size and any trim allowance
  • Check lettering, creases and fine detail for legibility
  • Flag weak areas that may crush or fill in
  • Advise on pressure points for a better sample impression

For printers under load-shedding pressure or tight dispatch windows, this early check can prevent a batch from sitting half done while someone waits on a correction. It is a small step but it usually saves more than it costs.

Dies for foil, embossing and combined effects

Finishing jobs often need more than one effect. A die may be used for hot stamping, debossing, embossing or a combination of these on the same piece. The shape of the artwork, the paperboard caliper and the finishing sequence all affect the final result, so the tooling needs to be matched carefully.

We produce brass and magnesium dies for a wide range of branding and packaging work, including cartons, sleeves, labels, folders and presentation items. Where the job needs a partner plate, counterforce or repeat order, we keep the production notes on file so the same result can be recreated without starting from scratch.

  • Embossing plates for raised detail and texture
  • Hot stamping dies for foil application and branding marks
  • Counterforce matching for cleaner impression control
  • Repeat ordering support for recurring packiging lines

Urgent turnaround for production bottlenecks

Sometimes the job is simple but the clock is not. A reprint may be waiting on one tool, a seasonal carton may have missed its original slot, or a client may have changed artwork at the last minute. In those cases, speed matters, but accuracy still comes first. An urgent die that needs to be remade badly is slower in the end.

Our team includes production, engraving, dispatch and artwork support, so we can move a job through the process without passing it around. That helps when the finishing floor is already booked and the courier has to leave Johannesburg the same day. If a file needs job filing or a previous impression has to be checked against a new version, we can pull that together before dispatch.

How to read the project pages

The examples in this hub are there to help you compare job types, not just finished looks. One page may show a fine logo detail that needed careful engraving, while another may focus on a repeat order with strict matching to an existing die. Look at the application, the material and the turnaround need before deciding which approach suits your own job.

When you are choosing a route for your next run, start with these questions:

  • Is this a one-off sample, a short run or a recurring packiging order?
  • Does the artwork need embossing, stamping or both?
  • Is the substrate smooth, textured or prone to crushing?
  • Will the finisher need a fast replacement or an altered copy of an older die?

If you are unsure, send the details through the enquiry form on our contact page and we will guide you on the right starting point.

Serving print finishers across South Africa

Our work goes out to print finishers and packaging houses in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Mbombela, with couriered dispatch arranged from Industria. South African production conditions are not always kind to fine tooling, especially where humidity, frequent handling or tight delivery windows are part of the day, so the dies need to arrive packed properly and ready to use.

That is why packing, dispatch and damage assessment are part of the service, not an afterthought. If a tool comes back for cleaning, alteration or a review of the impression, we can handle that and keep the job moving. For finishing teams, the value is simple: accurate tooling, fewer surprises, and a cleaner result on press.

Questions we get asked

What kinds of finishing jobs do you make dies for?

We make dies and embossing plates for hot stamping, embossing, debossing and related print finishing work, mainly for printers, finishers and packaging houses.

Can you help if I only have older artwork or an existing die?

Yes. We can review the file or existing tooling, advise on alterations, cleaning or remake options, and help you get back to the same result.

Do you courier nationwide from Johannesburg?

Yes. We are based in Industria, Johannesburg and courier dies to clients across South Africa, including major print and packaging centres.
