Gift Box Dies

Gift box dies are made for rigid cartons, sleeves and presentation packaging that need a clean stamped or embossed finish. We supply brass and magnesium tooling for print finishers, packaging houses and converters across South Africa, with checks, engraving and dispatch handled from Industria, Johannesburg.

Gift Box Dies Built For Presentation Packaging

Gift box dies are used to add foil, blind embossing or deep impression detail to rigid box lids, sleeves and premium presentation packs. They need to register cleanly on short runs and hold detail across repeated production, especially where a box has sharp folds, laminated board or textured wrapping paper. For that reason the die must be cut to suit the artwork, the board make-up and the press setup, not just the logo shape.

We make brass and magnesium dies for gift boxes in a range of formats, from simple brand marks on lids to full panel embossing with fine lettering. Brass is preferred where more pressure, longer life or sharper detail is needed. Magnesium is often used where turnaround is tight and the job needs a lighter tool. Both are machined for accurate repeat work and supplied ready for the finishing floor.

  • Suitable for rigid gift boxes, sleeves, cartons and presentation packs
  • Works with foil stamping, embossing and debossing applications
  • Made for short, medium and repeat production runs
  • Can be produced for flat work or formed carton panels

Sizes, Thicknesses And Die Options

Gift box dies are made to the exact artwork size, and the finished dimensions depend on the box panel or lid area being decorated. We commonly work from small logo plates of 40 x 40 mm right up to large lid panels of 300 x 450 mm and beyond, depending on machine bed size and the reach needed on the press. Where needed, the die can be split into sections for easier mounting and cleaner alignment.

Material choice is matched to the job. Magnesium dies are generally lighter and well suited to smaller graphics and faster turnaround. Brass dies are denser and better for longer production, deeper relief and more demanding packaging stock. If the job needs a matching counterforce, we can help with that too so the impression lands evenly across the carton surface.

  • Common plate sizes: 40 x 40 mm to 300 x 450 mm
  • Thickness options are selected to suit press height and mounting method
  • Available as flat dies, raised detail dies or matched embossing pairs
  • Fine line work, solid areas and type can all be prepared for packaging use

Where Gift Box Dies Work Best

These dies suit packaging that needs a polished, premium look without sacrificing production speed. They are used by print finishers and packaging houses producing rigid gift boxes for cosmetics, liquor, corporate gifts, confectionery and seasonal presentation packs. They also suit sleeves and wrap bands where the branding must stay crisp after folding and glueing.

Gift box tooling is especially useful when the finish has to survive handling in retail and courier distribution. The die must transfer detail cleanly on coated board, board with soft-touch lamination, textured paper wrap or metallic stock. In humid coastal areas like Durban and Gqeberha, we also factor in board movement and storage conditions so the impression remains consistent, not patchy or crushed.

  • Rigid gift boxes and luxury cartons
  • Presentation sleeves and wrap bands
  • Corporate gift packs and promotional packaging
  • Seasonal packaging with short lead times

Press Setup, Installation And Power Needs

Gift box dies are mounted on stamping or embossing equipment in the finishing department, usually on a heated platen or compatible press bed. The exact setup depends on the machine, the foil system and the depth of impression needed. Good make-ready matters: the press must be level, the chase secure and the counterforce aligned before full production starts. If the artwork is tight around a fold or window, the press operator should test the position first and then increase pressure carefully.

Most gift box jobs do not need special site services beyond the normal press requirements. Electrical supply should be stable and the heater controls must reach the correct working temperature for the stock and foil being used. Gas is only relevant where the finishing line uses a gas-fired heating system, which should be checked on site before commissioning. In load shedding periods, operators should plan warm-up time and avoid repeated power interruptions while the die is at temperature.

  • Installed on compatible hot stamping or embossing equipment
  • Requires stable power supply for heated tooling and controls
  • Gas only where the machine uses gas heating components
  • Press level, mounting and counterforce alignment are essential

What To Check Before You Place The Order

The most reliable results come from a complete artwork pack and clear production notes. We check the supplied artwork for line weight, spacing, bleed and any fold or crease conflicts before engraving starts. If the box has a drawer sleeve, hinged lid or unusual flap, send the flat dieline and the fold sequence so the mark sits in the correct place after assembly. Missing this step can lead to misalignment or a mark that lands too close to an edge.

When ordering, please confirm the final box size, stock type, finish, run quantity and whether the job is foil, blind embossing or both. We also need to know if there is a matching counterforce requirement, and whether a repeat order is going onto the same press as before. If a sample impression is available, include it. That helps us spot any pressure issues before the job is signed off, and it saves time on the floor.

  • Final box dimensions and folded panel sizes
  • Artwork in correct vector format with fonts converted to outlines
  • Stock type, coating, foil colour and impression depth
  • Whether a counterforce, repeat or alteration is needed

Care, Cleaning And Repeat Ordering

Gift box dies last longer when they are cleaned after use and stored dry. Foil residue, board dust and adhesive build-up can affect the next run, especially on fine type and small decorative lines. A light clean and proper packing after each job helps keep the face sharp and reduces the chance of dragging on the next impression. If the die has been used on laminated stock, it should be checked for polish loss or surface wear before the following production slot.

For repeat orders, we keep the job details filed so the replacement or additional die matches the original work. If the existing tool is damaged, bent or marked by a poor press setup, we can assess it and advise on cleaning, repair or remake. This is especially useful for national clients sending packaging work between Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town, because the same artwork may need to be dispatched quickly to different finishers.

  • Clean after use to remove foil, dust and adhesive residue
  • Store flat, dry and wrapped to prevent damage in transit
  • Request repeat ordering when the same artwork returns
  • Damage assessment available if a tool has been dropped or misused
