Multi Level Dies

Multi level dies are made for print work that needs more than one depth in a single impression. They create raised and recessed areas with clear definition, ideal for premium packaging and finishing runs across South Africa.

What Multi Level Dies Do on Press

Multi level tooling is used when a flat stamp is not enough. The die face is built with different heights so parts of the design press at different levels, giving a stronger tactile feel and a more detailed visual finish. In hot foiling, embossing, or combined foil and emboss work, this helps logos, borders, security marks and decorative panels stand out with cleaner separation.

We manufacture brass and magnesium multi level dies for offset, flexo and print finishing lines. Brass is usually chosen for longer runs, finer detail and tighter heat control. Magnesium is suitable for lighter duties and shorter runs where a lower-cost option is practical. If the job needs repeatable pressure across a large area, the counterforce and backing must be matched properly, otherwise the levels can crush or show uneven edges.

Sizes, Depths and Build Options

Multi level dies are made to suit the job, not the other way round. We work from supplied artwork or approved production files and then build the die size, relief depth and fixing method to fit the machine and substrate. Common use cases include carton fronts, sleeves, labels, hang tags, presentation boxes and specialty packaging inserts. The final footprint depends on the print area, the platen or cylinder size, and how much detail must be carried in the raised sections.

  • Material options: brass for high detail and long life, magnesium for lighter duty work
  • Typical relief levels: 2 level, 3 level and stepped profiles for layered effects
  • Working faces: polished, textured, or mixed detail depending on artwork needs
  • Mounting formats: machine ready base, adhesive backed plate, or clamped setup where required
  • Compatibility: hot foil stamping, embossing, debossing and combined finishing work

For clients in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and Mbombela, we courier finished dies nationwide. If you are planning a release date, allow for artwork checks, die cutting and dispatch time. Urgent turnrounds can be arranged where the job and press schedule allow.

Where Multi Level Dies Work Best

These dies are a good fit for packaging houses and finishers that want a premium impression without adding extra print passes. They work well on coated board, many paper stocks, some synthetic label materials and selected laminated substrates, provided the press settings are right. On heavier board the stepped effect can give strong depth and better shelf impact. On lighter material the detail must be kept controlled so the sheet does not buckle or over-crush.

Multi level tooling is often used for cosmetics, liquor packaging, corporate presentation boxes, luxury stationery, awards packaging and branded inserts. It also suits work where a tactile feature is needed for recognition or anti-counterfeit purposes. If the finished piece must run through a warehouse or be packed in humid coastal conditions, the artwork and foil choice should be checked early so the impression holds up after handling.

Installation, Press Setup and Power Needs

Installation depends on the machine type and the job format. A good fit starts with clean machine beds, correct packing, and accurate alignment to the registration marks. Multi level dies need even pressure across the entire face, with special attention to the deepest and lightest areas. If the press is under-set, the shallower levels may not show. If it is over-set, the deeper sections can flatten out or mark the stock.

Most hot stamping and embossing setups use heated tooling with controlled temperature rather than gas. Power needs vary by press and heating system, but the equipment should have stable supply, correct earthing and protection against load-shedding interruptions. In Johannesburg and other areas where supply can shift, it is worth planning a shut-down routine so the die and platen are not left at temperature longer than needed. For larger machines, confirm your electrical requirements before booking a run.

  • Check platen size and chase dimensions before ordering
  • Confirm heat range for the foil or emboss stock used
  • Set counterforce to match the deepest part of the die
  • Allow for warm-up and test impressions before full production
  • Keep backup power or restart steps in place for outages

Care, Cleaning and Repeat Orders

Multi level dies last longer when they are cleaned after each run and stored properly. Foil residue, paper dust and adhesive build-up can affect the next impression if the face is left dirty. A light brush and approved cleaning method is usually enough, but hard scraping should be avoided because it can round off fine detail. If the die has been exposed to moisture, especially on the coast, dry it before storage to prevent staining or corrosion.

For repeat orders, job filing makes a big difference. Keep the approved artwork, press notes, substrate details and any counterforce measurements together. That helps us match the original die more accurately and saves time on rework. If a die is damaged, bent, or not giving the same depth as before, send it in for damage assessment and we can advise whether cleaning, alteration or replacement is the better route.

What to Check Before You Order

Before placing an order, the most useful details are the exact artwork size, the substrate type, the machine brand or model, the foil or emboss finish required, and whether the job is a one-off or repeat production run. If you need a multi level effect to align with existing print, include the final printed sample or a clear image showing position and scale. The more precise the brief, the better the die will suit the press from the first pull.

Please also note any special packing or dispatch needs, especially for jobs going to outlying towns or sites with receiving limits. We pack dies for courier movement nationwide from Industria, Johannesburg, and we can advise on sample impression checks, die alterations and urgent turnaround where the production window is tight. If your team is comparing options, ask for artwork checks and sample impression advice before release to production, it avoids costly changes later.

  • Send final artwork in the correct scale and include bleed where needed
  • State the press type, substrate and finish
  • Confirm whether the die must match an existing job
  • Ask for counterforce matching if emboss depth is critical
  • Tell us if repeat filing is required for future reorders

Our team includes production, engraving, artwork prepress and dispatch support, so the job is handled in sequence from brief to courier. That keeps the process practical, and it helps you keep production moving without unnecessary back and forth.

Questions we get asked

When should I choose a multi level die instead of a flat die?

Choose a multi level die when the design needs different depths in one impression, such as layered logos, tactile features or premium packaging details.

Do you make brass and magnesium versions?

Yes. Brass suits longer runs and finer detail, while magnesium is often used for lighter duty work and shorter production schedules.

What details should I send with my order?

Please send the artwork size, substrate, finish type, press details and whether the die must match an existing job. If you have a sample, include that too.
